Biography

After 27 years of teaching art, Ronald Scales embarked on his life-

long desire to become a potter.  He has always been fascinated with the process of making raw clay into functional and artistic forms.  He is especially fond of creating designs using negative space (cut outs and carvings) and textures.  It is his goal to create bigger, better and unique wheel-thrown, slab, hand built, altered and carved pottery forms.  His hope is to elicit a favorable response from anyone who views or touches his work.

Mathematic and visual formulas are essential to Ron’s process. Body structure, patterns and proportions are designed to accommodate a need for light weight and durability.  The final product is pottery that’s practical, functional, and artistically vibrant.

All of Ron’s pottery is made from stoneware clay and electric fired to cone 6 (2232 deg. F).  Glazes are lead-free, hand mixed and sensibly applied for consumer safety.  The resulting product is dishwasher and microwave safe.  It can also be used in an oven with the proper care.

As a child, Ron was quite fond of playing in mud, sand and the native clay of California.  Today, he openly embraces his youthful curiosity mixed with the professional experience he’s acquired over time.
